The spring also heralds the start of a ten day Sculpture Festival. This is a festival featuring diverse pieces of art created from every imaginable material all displayed on the white clean sands and foreshore of Currumbin Beach. A Festival with a difference This is truly a festival with a difference; to start with there is no entry fee. You can browse through the outdoor exhibition virtually at any time and in most cases touch the artworks exhibited. To walk the Swell Festival along Pacific Parade is a delight; some of the displays can be interactive but most are for admiration, curiosity and awe. The Swell Sculptural Festival is an opportunity to take photos of art against an ocean backdrop, some look totally at odds with the environment but yet curiously give the impression they were meant to be. If you live on the Gold Coast you have the privilege of visiting this wonderful outdoor event many times over. You can capture those unique shots at the following time frames:
The Festival Setup Even the Swell Festival set up is worth a visit. Sit at one of the many cafes and watch the festival coming to life; it is interesting to observe the assortment of people coming together for a shared result. Watching artists mingling with logistics specialists, crane drivers with perplexed looks on their faces wondering what all the fuss is about. After all it is just a lump of wood. (That lump of timber is an art piece that took 12 months to create and worth thousands) and there are those who take utmost care of every movement from their vehicles, treating the precious cargo like a new born child. (They know the cost of an accident)Then you have the artists themselves who in some instances bring their creation on the back of Ute or strapped to the roof rack of a 'Combe Van' or a trailer depending on how large the piece is. It is not unusual to see an artist shoveling sand to make sure their sculpture sits accurately on the allocated spot all in the name of art. After spending so much time and effort in a creative pursuit, the end result of final display is vital. Had enough of looking When you have absorbed enough artwork, why not enjoy a meal or a glass of wine at one of the many restaurants on the beachfront, you can choose from a number of options. A quick snack while you are wandering from exhibit to exhibit or a sit down meal watching the Pacific Ocean roll in. If people watching is your thing, just do that and listen to the variety of comments from children to retired folk, who knows who will turn up? Perhaps you are not a walker, just buy a program and make your way to the exhibits that interest you, and maybe you will purchase one. What else can you do? There are a number of activities planned each year; generally they take the form of the following
Walking for pleasure and throwing in the mix distinctive artwork against an ocean backdrop is a walk good for the soul. See you on my next walk.
One of the joys of life is walking for pleasure, so many people today
are caught up in exercise and do not take the time to look around and
see and hear what is taking place. They rush passed you every morning or
evening to that never ending destination called good health. Good health
also means living in the moment and to do that you need to stop briefly
and take notice. So next time you go for a brisk walk or a run just stop
and soak in your surroundings.
My focus is not only good health through walking but enjoying the experience by taking note of the surroundings and sharing it in photos and video. Walk for pleasure.
